International widow’s day; Mrs Akeredolu emphasizes continuous support for widows

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate International Widows’ Day, the Wife of Ondo State Governor, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has called on all and sundry to continue to show support and care for widows who are usually marginalised and forgotten in society.

Mrs Akeredolu made this call today, in Akure, the Ondo State capital, in commemoration of the day, marked globally every 23rd of June to create awareness of the plight faced by women when they lose their spouse and highlight solutions to these problems.

Today is International Widows Day. "Often left without savings or any other income support, widows have been especially exposed to the sudden loss of employment during the pandemic, creating immediate and acute financial vulnerability, with serious consequences that range from food insecurity to increased susceptibility to human trafficking," Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women said on International Widows Day. The day is aimed at showing solidarity with women who have lost their partners. In a bid to empower women and safeguard the rights of widows, the UN General Assembly, on December 21, 2010, adopted a resolution and declared June 23 as International Widows Day.

2020 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WIDOWS A keynote Address by Her Excellency, Chief Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu in commemoration of the International Day of Widows on the 23rd of June, 2020. we celebrate the strongest of the womenfolk; those who have had a share of the unexpected pain and devastation that come with losing a life partner. We know how hard it can be for a couple to provide for and protect the family in developing countries like Nigeria, to then think how tough it will be to do same as a Widow is simply unimaginable. The problems associated to widowhood is not peculiar to Ondo State or Nigeria, it is a global concern. Even in developed climes, the gender inequality factor still limit women access to old age pension; making it more likely for the death of a spouse to destitution for older women.

Int’l Widows’ Day: Jubilation galore, as Mrs. Akeredolu flags off distribution of palliatives to over 8,000 Ondo widows

No fewer than 1,500 widows in Akure South Local Government area of Ondo state went home with relief package containing edible items as the wife of the Governor, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu flagged off the distribution of palliatives in commemoration of 2020 International Widow’s day. The exercise, which has Akure South as the piloting local government, is the aftermath of the OndoWidows’ Care initiative launched by the wife of the governor two months ago, through which over 8,000 widows registered on the website @ Ondowidows’.com
